Harnessing Heartland Values
Ever since John Boyt opened
his Des Moines saddle and harness works in 1901, the Boyt name has
been synonymous with the values upon which American business success
has been founded: quality materials, superior craftsmanship,
durability and innovation. Back when teams of draft horses tested
every stitch and every strap, Midwestern farmers came to know Boyt as
the standard for quality.
Testing Under Fire
Boyt Luggage proved its mettle during
the World Wars, as the company became part of the democracy’s arsenal
… crafting gun cases, holsters and parachute packs. Boyt-made nets
were pressed into service catching planes on aircraft carriers. It was
a test of durability that would soon be put to good use when the
company moved into civilian lines after the Wars.
Boyt Luggage soon applied its case-making expertise to a range of products,
including sporting goods, hunting equipment and more. In the first of
a series of innovations, Boyt created the market’s first soft-sided
luggage, harnessing its experience making products for the most
grueling conditions. Called “The Ugly Ones—No Nonsense Luggage by
Boyt,” the new line was constructed of the same material used in Boyt
gun cases and duffels. The “No Nonsense” bags were so successful that
Boyt extended the idea into an entire category of related products.
Redefining Innovation
As Boyt focused on luggage
products for the frequent business traveler that would stand up to the
abuse of taxi drivers, skycaps and automatic luggage handlers, the
company continued to innovate. In 1987, the Mach II line was
introduced. It
quickly
established a new benchmark of success for the industry, and served as
the platform for a number of innovations. Wheeled gliders, high-tech
polymer wheels, retractable handles and super-strong, self-healing
ballistic nylon materials were introduced. Boyt’s walk-in-closet®
became one of the most widely copied products on the market.
Today’s products profit from our century-long tradition of
craftsmanship, married to state-of-the-art innovation. Boyt’s
ergonomically-designed features and product details are the result of
countless hours of observational research. Subtleties and nuances in
design create a compelling case that consumers can see, touch and
feel.
Projecting Boyt’s Luggage Legacy into

When John Boyt started his
business, he knew that each harness had his name literally branded
into the leather as a personal promise of its quality.
We continue to be proud to “brand” the Boyt Luggage name on each product we
